#This week (no. 10)

πŸ“– I recently finished Universal Harvester: A Novel by John Darnielle. The concept sounded so great I pre-ordered the book: Life in a small town takes a dark turn when mysterious footage begins appearing on VHS cassettes at the local Video Hut. The journey was great, the ending not so much. But after finishing the book I did read a half dozen reviews online and thought about the characters and stories for days to come, so maybe the book had the intended effect.1 ∎

🎧 The 20 year anniversary of Biggie Small’s death was on March 9th. This paragraph from a 22-year-old New York Times article is full of foreboding: Every time the front door of the apartment building opened, he leaped up to see who was climbing the stairs. On this day, there were a pair of black 9-millimeter Rugers under the mattress in his bedroom. β€œI’m not paranoid to the point where –” He paused. β€œYes, I am. I’m scared to death. Scared of getting my brains blown out.”2 ∎

πŸŽ₯ My almost two-year-old son and I have been watching rocket launch videos. This one of the Space Shuttle launch is the best. Straight to the goods: fire, smoke, engine roar, and off to space. ∎

πŸŽ™οΈ My new favorite podcast3 is Bread Time. The content is great, the length is perfect (about 15 minutes), and the hosts don’t have the typical β€œpodcast voice.” ∎

🏈 My football team sucks, but my basketball team is awesome. ∎

  1. Tacitly related, Darnielle is also the lead of the Mountain Goats and he wrote a song about Jedi: The Ultimate Jedi Who Waste All the Other Jedi and Eats Their Bones.↩

  2. I’m pretty sure I found that article via Kottke, but can’t find the link now.↩

  3. Besides Missing Richard Simmons.↩
